  • Tin SnPbAg. This wire is 62% tin, 36% lead and the remaining 2% is silver. Fusion occurs at 190º. It is the most balanced and the one used for most medium-duty jobs.

Alloys and degrees of fusion

The above are undoubtedly the most used and convenient threads in the vast majority of cases but, of course, you are going to find other alloys and different degrees of fusion, so that, calmly, whatever your project, you will have a suitable thread. Let’s look at other examples:

  • Tin bismuth alloy . Melting occurs at only 138 ° C.
  • Tin-lead alloy . It requires an average temperature, 183 ºC.

  • Tin-silver-bismuth alloy . This alloy is more versatile, with a variable melting point between 205 and 215 ºC.

What can be soldered with tin?

  • How to solder silver with tin. In this, the essential thing is that the wire is silver and, be careful, use a torch so that the solder is not too soft. Silver also requires a stripper.
  • How to solder wires with tin . You should strip the ends of the wires and twist the wires and give it a little heat before you start so that the paste is applied more easily. You need, indeed, a paste in which we will directly wet the cables or that we will use to impregnate their tips with a brush.
  • How to solder brass with tin. It requires the use of thin tin wire as well as brass or copper and stripper to clean the areas that are going to be tinned.
  • How to solder lead with tin. We cannot solder lead with tin because the materials are so different. To get a good job you need to weld with lead and at a very high temperature. We can make the exception if we use a tin wire with a high percentage of lead and the solder is not going to be continuously subjected to pressure.
  • How to weld sheet metal and galvanized sheet with tin . In addition to the tinner you will need a torch and electrodes, which will depend on the material of the plates. Polish and remove the galvanizing to make direct contact with the sheet. You will have to hold the plates with pliers or pliers.

  • Component cleaning. To work on the real surface, obviously, it must be perfectly clean. Depending on what we are going to weld, it will be necessary to use stripper or, at least, water and alcohol rubbed with a clean cloth that does not release residue (it will depend on the elements to be cleaned, of course).
  • Proper temperature. Be clear about the temperature to work with and wait for it to be reached (except in the case of instant welders). In this way, we will not destroy the materials by undoing them with high but insufficient temperatures.
  • Proper position. Always seek the use of the 45º welder since with the verticality (which we tend towards it for comfort), the contact surface is reduced and, with it, energy, and may also leave small cracks that are poorly welded.
  • Don’t blow the tin. It may seem safer so that we can continue working with less risk more quickly but the truth is that this makes the weld brittle, being more fragile and, therefore, obtaining a worse or even insufficient result.
